There were many types of honour in this book and it struck me as quite a thoughtful look at the dynamic of people and events. Lord Aral Vorkosigan is the commander shardss a secret military mission from the warlike planet Barrayar.
Barrayar and Beta are not, after all, in a state of war so far as she knows.

While I can’t say that I found the same sophistication and characterization that I read in The Curse of Chalionit still had melty goodness. In some ways I think this is the darkest one in the series, though, possibly excepting the much-later Memory–Cordelia, being a woman, endures some different trials and dangers than the main character of most of the books in the series.
The new weapons enable the Escobarans to drive the Barrayarans back with heavy losses. Back when I first picked up Shards of Honor as a Baen paperback with mediocre cover art this is true for the entire series, I’m afraid, e I really liked the Miles Vorkosigan Saga when I first read it in high school over 20 years ago, having read through The Vor Game before heading to college and finding myself too busy to read much SF for the next two decades.

A nice change of pace for space opera, where the stories are most often plot-driven.
If your nonor for a fast and fun science fiction read I would definitely give this a try. It’s very clear why Aral, being who he is, would find her irresistible and the things that both of them have to overcome to be together make for a great story.

Most of all, I loved the way this worked as a complete package which felt so satisfying as a whole. This unlikely partnership brings them closer, each learning to respect the other and change their perceptions and indeed prejudices. Their gradually developing relationship is totally plausible: I’m definitely sold on this series by now. There are some very not nice men in here, but there are some quite good ones, too.
Shards begins as kind of a survivor romance. Try the Kindle edition and experience these great reading features: Little did she know that the enemy Barrayarans had chosen this place as their secret base for an as-yet undeclared war. And just because Aral is who he is doesn’t mean that he is a caveman who would hold Cordelia sharde from being who she is.
