He feels tired because the work is too much. And could there be some connection between the young woman’s death and the murders? I find myself reading just because I like Kurt. On top of these sick events, we have to deal with the real world worries of Wallander as he mulls over what is going on in the world around him. While it started out rather gripping any time a person lights themselves on fire in the middle of an open field, you have my attention but I felt that it got a tiny bit slow, just as all the Wallander books do.

When his murder events occur in a Scandinavian country, I become even more wary of what might come next. Dark, but good, like turning over a slimy rock and gaping at what you find underneath. Normally I don’t care much for that style of mystery, as it removes the puzzle aspect of the book and turns it into more of a thriller, but it worked very well in this case. The murder has the obvious markings of a demented serial killer, and Wallander is frantic to find him before he strikes again.


This is another very intriguing and entertaining entry in the series and, as always, it allows Mankell to make observations about a number of social issues.

T Reading this book, I found myself really wishing that Inspector Kurt Wallander sidetracoed get some professional help.

This, while unknown to Kurt our killer in possession of keys to the apartment waits for them to go to sleep. Sidetracked starts dramatically with a girl setting majkell on fire – an ‘open-and-shut’ suicide case that affects Wallander not because it is suspicious but because it happened in front of him and he can’t understand why a young person would choose to inflict such pain on themselves.


The Nordic weather, cold to the bones, drives its populace indoors for much of the year where cuddling up to read the latest in crime fiction is a national pastime. Also by Henning Mankell. The plot is compelling and moves along swiftly; as always the characters are very interesting, and all in all, this is a book that should appeal to large numbers of crime fiction fans.

The overall impression is of someone who is fundamentally decent, who makes mistakes, but honestly tries to do his best. However these events sideteacked a very small part of the book.
