Day of the Jackal is an archetype of the modern “techno-thriller”. His first full length novel, The Day of the Jackal, was published in and became an international bestseller and gained its author the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Novel. The police including a number of quasi-police agencies with few qualms about methods are well aware of the plot to assassinate de Gaulle — several unsuccessful attempts have been made — and they quickly surmise that the plotters have a hired killer.
The OAS realise that they are compromised by the French secret service, and the only way to kill de Gaulle is to hire a professional assassin who is unknown to the French authorities. In his mids, he had been posted as a journalist to Paris. Those who you knew were going to die did die.
