Interesting ideas though, and I liked the world being created. They travel to Corbeth to meet their employer.

It intrigued me and had me guessing throughout the whole book and I never even came close to guessing what was really going on. I loved how the politics of the Witch world revealed themselves slowly to both Doppelgganger and Miryo, and how they find themselves tangled up in a greater design, set in motion by others, that draws them inexorably towards a face to face confrontation.

Both characters are strong, independent, determined, and likable. The doppelgangee conflict, so to say, is the witch doppelganger has to kill her other half to be able to control her powers.

It also struck me as cohesive, with a unique magic system and a culture that truly seemed integrated into it. Which is sitting by my brehnan just waiting to be read.

Her soul is not complete, not while her doppelganger, the Warrior Mirage, still lives. To control her powers and become a full witch, she must find her doppelganger, Mirage, and kill her.

To control her powers and become a full witch, Miryo has only one choice: This double has to be killed in order for her to be able to dopelganger and use her power. It was just a lovely thread throughout the story — never too overt or obnoxious, but always an interesting question as to what to really believe — and faith comes into play in very important ways, on all sides.

Watching Miryo and Mirage and seeing how they are the same yet different was also intriguing. Great world building, brennna. The premise is a good one, and the plot is solid.

Want to Read saving…. A very slow start for me, it took a long time for me dpopelganger read because the storyline didn’t catch my interest or connect with me.

Mirage is a strong woman, with a chip on her shoulder and something to prove. I liked the original ideas, I liked the characters, the setting was interesting. The premise sounded originally and interesting and it was.

This novel has a really interesting bernnan on magic: Each ray of magic, based on five elements, is led by a prime, with the Doppelgangeg Prime leading all the rays. Oh I need to go kill my other half to regain control of my magic? Usually I’m really good at that. Mirage is the doppelganger, a particularly gifted warrior and Hunter.

Doppelganger (Doppelganger, book 1) by Marie Brennan

In many ways, they truly are the same person, and it’s fun to watch Brennan explore their similarities and differences, and the connection between them. Miryo by contrast was far less interesting to me. I was satisfied with the ending. The story ties up nicely, but there is still more to be resolved in the sequel.

I didn’t invest much of a personal investment in any of them, and Eclipse Mirage’s partner was basically just in the background the whole time.

It took half the book for the two main characters to meet up and then in one chapter they had resolved to not kill each other and became friends. I don’t know why I didn’t really take to her, but every time I was reading about the witch I was wishing I was reading about Mirage. Mirage is a hunter, a class of warriors tasked with many of the policing jobs.

Circumstances of their unknown past, tradition, current events doppelgznger a conspiracy throw the two of them into direct conflict Apr 22, Unsu rated it it was amazing.

Mirage knew nothing of her doppleganger, so it should have taken her days to come to terms with that fact, and then begin to trust her. I enjoyed the concept of the world and the plight of the characters.

Narika-kai notices that Miryo is jumpy that day and correctly assumes Miryo is studying and also says every witch studies herself exhausted when her trials approaches. Brennan did an marue job of creating this world. Brennan splits the narrative between the two characters, making us equally love and root for both of them, while at the same time creating a growing sense of dread as the book inexorably marches towards the loss of one or the dopppelganger. The writing style is very nice, it flows very well through action sequences and down time.

Doppelganger Series by Marie Brennan

There was so many opportunities for something exciting or unexpected to happen. It’s like having an evil twin, except well it’s not evil. It’s well plotted and interesting, with a twist towards the end. The characters are very unique and I love them.
