The book is essentially drqwing collection of plates that offer various degrees of difficulty. I had always wanted to see what it looked like, and now I’m probably going to buy a copy and work my way through it as well.

It starts off with teaching the ability to judge lines and proportions, charels moves onto cast studies, and finally the copying of masterworks. The Bargue course is the one that Vincent Van Gogh worked his way through twice on his own. This is simply astounding. I do believe that this wilful abandonment of the traditions of the past has given rise to a growing representational movement which has a strong tendency to hark back barvue the late 19th century. For those who are interested in classical drawing, this book is a must.
Bargue also had the knack of simplifying his forms in order to make them clearer and easier chafles copy for the aspiring student. Many of the lessons found in examining and replicating these plates are used by contemporary artists in their work.
I choice Charles Bargue. If you just love drawing and have money to burn, you should buy it. I learned the technique of sight size from this book, which I now apply to great benefit in much of my other work. Thanks for the info, Anthony. There is something so beautiful about pencil on paper….

This stuff is hard, and takes years to learn. The manner in which it has been done is considerably less impressive. Charpes Bargue book is a series of plates which are to be copied, with some brief instructions on how to do so.
Hardcoverpages. Does one have to copy the plates and enlarge them or can one use the plates as found in the book?
I have just started using this course after drawing and painting most of my life, and feel that it will be very beneficial. Drawihg actually have to do the drawings! Students were expected to copy these drawings with great accuracy, producing work which was to all intents and purposes indistinguishable from the originals, assuming they were up to the job.
