And along the way, she makes some friends, both among her peers at school and among her teachers goodmaan their acquaintances, but she also makes a truly menacing enemy, one who may know Ava’s story better than she does. Again she hears the bells when the man appears at the garment factory where she is a seamstress, and it burns to the ground.

Oct 08, Minutes Young Adult Buy. The novel is at its best when the story turns to the topic of forbidden love and sparks fly between Ava and the mysterious dark-eyed, winged boy who rescues blytthewood on more than one occasion. I really, really enjoyed this book! I haven’t enjoyed a book so much since Harry Potter. Where was the grandmother all these years? If you want some brilliant Gothic paranormal YA, you need this book.

Suddenly, Ava godman herself face to face with her estranged grandmother and the opportunity to attend the school of her dreams. There are hints and sparks of attraction throughout, but not until the final pages does it appear to be finding its footing.
When the factory catches on fire, Avaline is saved by a winged boy and put into an asylum because of her ravings. Her mother has died of a laudanum overdose, her best friend perished in a factory fire, and she has just escaped from a mental institution where she was admitted under suspicious circumstances.
View all 3 comments. If you enjoy fantasy, I highly recommend Carol Goodman’s Blythewood. However, Ava isn’t just an average working girl. I like that the villains have pasts and motivations, and the parallels between caro, and the treatment of the faerie creatures are strong.

Blythewood is a wonder; the school, the book, the new mythologies I alternately couldn’t put it down and wanted to savor every minute of this richly portrayed world. She is then rescued by her grandmother, and sent on an interview to Blythewood.
And the more rigorously Ava digs into the past, the more dangerous her present becomes. Ava, though, bravely found employment at the Triangle Blyythewood factory.

Ava has harbored hopes of attending it, due to her mother’s stories, and true to the tradition of cutting off your nose to spite your faceAva acts like an absolute contrary bitch when she actually gets the chance to attend the school of her dreams. I’ve seen some complaints about caril pacing of the story, blythewoov I thought the flow of this book added richness to this tale, and I enjoyed becoming deeply immersed in this world.
After a harrowing stay in Bellevue, where she is held captive, blythewoox is rescued by her estranged grandmother and sent to Blythewood, a boarding cxrol full of secrets, magic, and danger. Bellair beautifully portrayed Ava as a girl who’s not quite sure of her sanity and also not certain of her toodman in the world.

The Darklings, the fae, and the other inhabitants of the Blythe Wood are just such a gray area, and I can’t wait to delve further into that magic in future installments.
