Whose side were they on?
As Lady Keating takes more of an interest in Pen and reveals seasoj own magical secret, Pen is excited to learn more about the ancient Celtic magic that runs in Lady Keating’s family and discovers Ireland suits her more than she ever dreamed.
I am a huge fan of anything Victorian, so I loved the plot of this book.
Though technically not a Regency, it follows the same rules as teenage twins move in and out of London Society. First off, some of the phrases used were strange. All the characters I’d grown to know and love from the first book were gone. She seriously wants what is best for her son, but doesn’t bother to ask him. She needs a third witch, preferably family, to help invoke the power of the Triple Goddess to get her spell to work. Unfortunately, it just fell flat.
First, it has the surprisingly common problem of being a book set in a world with magic, but then not having all that much magic in it.
This is a most fortuitous meeting. How could you be less pretty than your sister?!? There was more emphasis on the magical aspect of the Leland’s life, and we got a glimpse into what other people with magical abilites do to train this, not just what Ally teaches Persy and Pen.
The girls’ governess is kidnapped, and all of her family including some practitioners of magic know it, yet weeks pass during which they do absolutely nothing, and it falls on two teenage girls and their little brother to save her?
There was a bit more sexuality in Betraying Season, which turned me off a little even though they don’t end up sleeping together yes, I’m one of those that goes for the clean, good stories. One can’t take it for serious. Outgoing Pen is excited about the balls and parties, whereas bookish Persy is full of dread: This book was a good meld of debutante society, love, magic and adventure.
After her twin sister, Persephone, marries – during her first London season, no less – teenage witch Penelope Leland travels to Ireland in the spring of with her former governess Ally, who is also newly married.
Not the ending she chose, but really the last page of the book – the last few paragraphs. Can’t wait to read the next book. I kept reading hoping she would gain her confidence she didn’t. She has a wicked tongue and a changeable nature. This should have been a story about a young woman fighting to prove herself in a male driven magi world. Apr 01, Jane rated it liked it. Jul 02, Adriana rated it really liked it Shelves: That’s a Disney reference, btw.
BEWITCHING SEASON by Marissa Doyle | Kirkus Reviews
Persy, though, was super annoying. The twins get repeated nightmares about their governess, which leads them to think Ally is in grave danger.
Read a longer review here: He goes along with it because he always goes along with his mother. But all of his other male students seem to resent her inclusion into the study sessions.
In Bewitching Season I had a problem with the romance between Ally and her soon-to-be husband. Yes, there still should have been mystery and romance and amazingly gorgeous ball gowns that I as a woman would kill to get to wear just once. Maybe if more time had been spent with their relationship it would seem clearer, but for me it was a bit unbelievable. The love interest seems a little too perfect but he’s more Prince Philip than Prince Charming, so I was happy.
This second book sounds better, but is it actually? The characters were interesting even if the main plot was lacking a little at times. After their magic instructing governess is kidnapped, the two begin to investigate her disappearance, while also dealing with the social obligations of the ton. Beditching did he find him? I do look forward to reading the next book and I will keep my eye on this author in the future.
And the only thing that I knew about Lady Keating’s appearance was that she possessed a green and silver ring which she always wore.
Two completely gorgeous people happen to have important magical similarities and happen to fall in love on the spot and neither happens to be spoilt rotten?
Bewitching Season (Leland Sisters, book 1) by Marissa Doyle
It gives a sense of the difficulties for a teen girl during that time period without being boring. Way to cut out everything that doesn’t make sense! I appreciated that The Betraying Season focused more on magic, but I didn’t particularly care for the Triple Goddess thing.
The girls’ differences thoughout made the book so interesting and it was really evident that they depended on each other for different strengths.
