Detailed chronicles of frrale Crusade and the political workings of successive popes overshadow the story of the Templars themselves. Some of the charges had merit but a lot was lies and false witness plus a lot of templarx as he had the Knigts arrested, jailed, tortured, and many, including Grad master Jacque de Molay, burned at the stake.

Barbara Frale is a historian on staff at the Vatican Secret Archives. Being interested in this historic religious organization but knowing little about it other than as portrayed in popular fiction, I was hoping for a lot of insight from this book.


Frale’s methodology has tempkars criticized, partly based on the objection that the writings are too faint to see. Media reporter, reviewer, producer, guest booker, blogger.

Though not a bad read, I did find it somewhat disappointing. The author debunks common delusions about the origins, organization, rise to prominence and ultimate demise of the Knights Templar, using troves of documents fale unearthed from the Vatican Secret Archives.

But there wasn’t much here I hadn’t read elsewhere. The story how this came about is very interesting.

This is a well-researched, and professionally written history of a fascinating organization that was quite powerful for several hundred years and which still interests numerous people til this day. Because it is only about pages long, there is a lot of history crammed into relatively few words. So much of their story is entangled with monarchical history and political intrigue, as well as monetary graft to save persons of royal ancestry, that you will find the entire story incredibly complex.


The author writes from and unabashedly Roman Catholic view point, which I honestly think helps one to understand the Templars in their own setting and their own self-identity.

The Secret History Revealed. This is totally a political history. I quite enjoyed this book, it gave a good overview of the history of the Templar’s and their organization. Also at times I felt like a needed a diagram to figure out where the people belonged.
