Trivia Malico movie’s Badlands title is actually really a geographical term, but has a double meaning for the movie because of the murders that are committed.

The story, badlabds fictional, is loosely based on the real-life murder spree of Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugatein[2] though that basis was not acknowledged when the film was released. Holly is a naive, young girl. I love its use of music, the cinematography, the narration, everything. This tender treatment does nothing to alleviate the horror of the atrocities committed.

This is murder as a role-playing game. Both Oliver Stone and Tony Scott heavily cribbed from it for Natural Born Killers and True Romance, respectivelyand I’m sure a lot of others have too, but those two stick out the most.


It’s a tremendous job. A writer indulging in all that Los Angeles and Las Vegas has to offer undertakes a search for love and self via a series of adventures with six different women. Fancying himself a rebel like James Dean, twentysomething Kit Martin Sheen takes off with teen baton-twirler Holly Sissy Spacek after shooting her father Warren Oates when he tries to split the pair up.

A true rebel without a cause. Estrin remains credited as the sole editor, however, with Weber credited as associate editor. Badlands () | The Criterion Collection

He found a toaster. It is a lyrical and disturbing road movie produced by a filmmaker who, despite his inexperience, managed to craft one of the great films of the decade in this warped romantic adventure about two young lovers and their senseless killing spree across the Dakota badlands. Very raw and very visceral. All in all, I think this is some excellent stuff, and definitely feel you should give it a shot. Though Malick paid close attention to period detail, he did not want it to overwhelm the picture.
