Ayla finds herself torn between her strong feelings for Ranec and her powerful love for the wildly jealous and unsure Jondalar. When I’d read the book as a teenager, I’d been more annoyed than I was this time, as I saw the plot largely relying on the fact that characters weren’t speaking to one anothe I’m slowly but surely working my way through the Earth’s Children series and this happens to be my least gunters of the bunch.
That was why he was starting to see in Ayla a work of art, the most perfect expression of womanhood that he could imagine. Mamut learned some of the Clan sign language during that stay, and became aware of the fact that the Clan are human as opposed to other animals, as is the common opinion of most of his people.

You could have had an interesting conflict with Jondalar being ashamed of Ayla living with the Clan and how his family would take it that actually wasn’t too bad. There really is a lot of good served up alongside of the bad in this novel, you just have to be patient and pick through emotionally volatile idiots and repetitive descriptions to get to it.
