Then heat rapidly from F to F and hold for 3 to 5 minutes followed by quenching in oil, air or salt bath. It may be shaped by grinding but is relatively poor in regard to capability of being ground. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. The maximum Brinell hardness and minimum Rockwell C hardness for the tool steels are given.
ASTM A T5 High Speed Tool Steel Round Bar
Two intermediate high speed tool steels designated as M50 and M52 are also covered. Unless otherwise aastm, material shall be made by an electric melting process. Do Not forge below F.
Cold asmt may be accomplished with the alloy in the annealed condition. M2 is classified as a “medium” machinability tool steel in the annealed condition.
See “Forging” and consult the supplier for information on working at lower temperatures. Selection will depend upon design, service conditions, and mechanical properties. Distributors will offer small quantity buys while mills will generally only sell large quantities, with delivery times anywhere from 10 to 50 weeks depending on size and form required This material is stocked primarily in Bar Products by 28 distributors but is also available to a lesser extent in Flat Rolled Products, Wire Products, and Shapes.

Formed by machining or forging and then machining. Hardens by heat treatment and quenching. Temper at F for a hardness of Rockwell C 60 to ASTM does not give any warranty express or implied or make any representation that the contents of this abstract are accurate, complete or up to date.
Preheat at F before heating for hardening. Link to Active This link will always route to the current Active version of the standard.
Primarily used for cutting tools. The M2 alloy has somewhat better wear resistance than M1.
Anneal at F and slow furnace cool at 40 F per hour, or less. Consult the alloy supplier for information on the advisability of welding. It is informational only and not an official part of the standard; the full text of the standard itself must be referred to for its use and application.

Not applicable to this alloy. Referenced Documents purchase separately The xstm listed below are referenced within the subject standard but are not provided as part of the standard. Modulus of Elasticity Tension.
This abstract is a brief summary of the referenced standard. A chemical analysis of each heat of steel shall be made to determine the percentage of the elements specified including carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, and cobalt and these values shall conform to the requirements as to the prescribed chemical composition.
See “Heat Treatment” and “Tempering”. Historical Version a060 – view previous versions of standard. Forge at F down to F.
