In ayatsji to raise spirits and honour his memory, the rest of the class decide to spend the rest of the year pretending that he is still alive. I was curious to how the book was though compared to the anime so that is why I read it in earnest.

Similarly, as the character that Sakakibara interacts with the most, Misaki is very well fleshed out. Who knew if it might be days later, months later, or even years later. The 47 th year of Showa.

He isn’t as knowledgeable as the other people involved, and they are reluctant to share information with him, so Koichi is largely left to investigate on his own.

The best example I can think of for this is how one character was referred to: At least, not the way conventional ghost work. Some things could be improved with better translation, but others are flaws inherent to the novel itself. It was a great strategy, on Ayatsuji’s part, for hiding clues, but it also became a little repetitive at times.
The tension then proceeds to deepen with the turn of a page. The book was written in the first person, from Koichi’s perspective, and was sometimes so stilted that it just wasn’t believable as a year-old’s POV.

There is so much open for interpretation and so many aspects that are left unexplained. In class, he develops a sense of unease as he notices that the people around him act like they’re walking on eggshells, and students and teachers alike seem frightened. It is that edition upon which the English translation by Karen McGillicuddy is based.

Retrospectively, the reveal does fit into the overall narrative, and there were some clues hinting at it scattered throughout the novel, but it isn’t foreshadowed as well as it could have been. The novel was originally serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s literary magazine Yasai Jidai in intermittent periods between the August and May issues.
Outside it was bright with good weather, but translaation wind that blew in for some reason felt unexpectantly cool. View all 12 comments. The afterward to the paperback edition printed at the back of the English edition mentions that the book was originally serialized, which probably accounts for that.
