Some writers have taken a small set of circumstances and through literary skills have transformed the events and characters into something over and beyond the simple story on which the work is based. Stifter’s prose is quite admirable, although the story itself is nothing out of the way. Should I admit to you that this book is only seventy-five pages long? I generally shared the sentiments of the other two reviewers — though a sfifter story, it is very well written.

Like a glass of Perrier with roc, so-thin-you-can-read-through-it slice of cucumber in it. Who am I kidding? That is an added bonus to me. But it did not take me long to realize in fact that Adalbert Stifter was very good at this craft of writing.

I can see why some people find Rock Crystal sweet, others cloying – I’m midway. Cryztal a relief to find Stifter celebrating humanism and the sublimity of human life, even in a remote cleft of traditional decency in a valley surrounded by titanic peaks and glacial eternities. Stifter’s own life failed to avoid catastrophe: For scenery description, I’d give this 5 stars, unfortunately there is also a story. It was a great relief for me to read this classic novella, recommended to me by my trans-Pacific amazonian book sharer.
